Decary’s Poinciana is a rare and highly sculptural deciduous tree native to the arid spiny forests of Madagascar. It is a member of the "caudiciform" group, characterized by a distinctive, water-storing trunk that bulges at the base, giving it a bottle-like or bonsai-esque silhouette even at a young age. During the dry season, it transforms with a spectacular display of large, orchid-like flowers that open pure white and mature into a deep apricot or red. Ideally suited for Mediterranean or tropical climates (USDA zones 10–11), this drought-tolerant species is a favorite for collectors of "fat-trunk" trees. While it can reach significant sizes in the ground, it is perfectly adapted to container life, which naturally stunts its growth and accentuates its dramatic, swollen trunk.
