The Pencil Cactus is a visually striking, shrubby succulent native to Africa, renowned for its dense thicket of slender, cylindrical green branches. These "pencil-like" stems lack traditional leaves, allowing the plant to photosynthesize efficiently in arid environments. In the ground, this vigorous grower can reach heights of over 7 feet (2 m), though it remains a popular, manageable specimen for architectural indoor containers. While it is exceptionally hardy and drought-tolerant, extreme caution is required: like many Euphorbias, it contains a milky white latex that is highly toxic and can cause severe skin irritation or temporary blindness upon contact with eyes.
